We did a role play where I represented the man on the left,
and Selvia represented the refugee family on the right.
This exercise can make us more empathetic and relate to
other people's feelings. This is crucial for our further design
since we need to consider the needs of others.
Selvia: We need a safe Haven, and it is unfair for us because
we are innocent in war.
Raifah: We cannot afford taking you all and we need to maintain
our country and we can't provide enough resource for everyone.
Additional Information:
When we did a discussion together, some "refugees" said that they
felt "sad" and "angry", they felt "broken", and Selvia said it was unfair.
For our side, some said they would, shoot them? (I don't know why).
But the discussion mainly made me feel that my previous discussion
with Selvia didn't show empathy (since they showed emotions while
we didn't). It felt like a never ended war where
both of us wouldn't back off. Someone suggested
we should offer jobs for them once they learn the skills, the border
police side (our side) argued we can't offer that many jobs and we
didn't want to get into trouble with other countries. However, thinking
of the ATL skills, I reflected on our stand and said to the "refugees"
that we can offer some shelter and food since they are in a much
worse situation compared to us. In short term, we should give some
support to these refugees, just like how we analyze the pros and cons
of existing products, we should compare our loss to others and resonate
with their sorrows. If they don't even have a shelter and could starve to
death, "our country" losing some resources and sacrificing jobs doesn't
seem much. In conclusion, it's important to not be selfish in these situations
and this role play really made me reflect deeper on this problem and think multi-facedly.
